Faux Slate Cheeseboard

Ingredients

  • 1 wooden slab/wooden serving tray
  • 1 soft bristle paintbrush
  • 1 small bottle of non-toxic, water based chalkboard paint in black, such as Art Minds or Martha Stewart
  • Painters tape
  • Chalk

Directions

  1. Begin by cleaning and wiping the surface dry.

  2. Using the painters tape, make a straight line cutting the board in half about 2/3rd’s of the way. Use two pieces if you think you might be a little messy. Press down on the tape making sure it’s flat and even.

  3. Shake up the paint so it’s evenly mixed.

Carefully, going in one direction, paint the smaller side of the taped off board. Make sure you do an even coat and there are no bubbles or bristles left on the paint. However it looks now is how it’ll look when it dries.

  4. Let dry for 1-2 hours before applying the second coat. After applying the second coat, let sit for a full 24 hours to harden and dry. Clean paintbrushes with warm soapy water.

  5. Carefully peel back the tape. Your board is ready to use.

Disclaimer: I only painted half of the board so the cheese can go on the wooden part, and you can draw and label on the painted side. Chalkboard paint is NOT intended to come in contact with food, BUT I did use a non-toxic, water based brand. Use at your own discrepancy.
